The world is changing day by day and the information we have today is out of date as long as we do not follow the innovations. The development of technology, the fact that the borders between countries become insignificant, and the need to carry out work from different countries due to economic and legal requirements cause the leadership to change shape. Global leadership is beginning to come to the fore because borders began to blur and the work done went beyond the borders of the country when local leadership was dominant in the past. In this article, firstly, the definition of global leadership will be made, then the characteristics and importance of global leadership will be mentioned, and then how global leadership can be achieved will be discussed.

Global leadership is taking leadership across borders. In other words, it is to lead people of various cultures and backgrounds in international terms and to act as a bridge between different perspectives, traditions, cultures and approaches brought by multinationalism. For example; the center of a bank in Turkey, this relationship requires senior executives to be able to better manage the high level of global leadership to lead in excess of branch managers and employees in other countries and borders. Because these people are expected to reduce the temporal, geographical and cultural differences between shareholders and employees, and to facilitate cooperation, interaction and communication between corporate structures.

As global leadership requires operating in various regions, there are a number of difficulties that multinationalism poses in the management process. Among these difficulties, geographical distance, time differences, having different cultures, benefiting from technology for communication and different access to technology in each country, legal differences and institutional organization schemes can be shown. Therefore, in order to overcome these difficulties, leaders must have certain characteristics.

Global leadership requires effective use of technology, as the majority of work in multicultural and distant environments will be carried out not physically, but through internet, telephone and similar communication channels. This makes it compulsory to master communication and coordination skills. This is a requirement of leading the teams that do not work together and located in different countries, and to bridge the gap between different institutional structures. In addition, time differences and national infrastructures contribute to change, differences and innovations quickly and effectively. It makes keeping up as a necessary element. Therefore, global leaders must be open to innovations and self-improvement.

Global leaders need to have high levels of resilience, as leading large teams will present challenges. Because in a global context with cultural differences, global leaders must be able to respond to the expectations of employees with different expectations in accordance with the company’s global policies. This requires understanding the emotions of employees from different cultures, not giving up in the face of difficulties, and learning from difficulties and moving forward. For example; Crises are inevitable in the financial world. Crises can be global or local.
In a local crisis in which the branch it cooperates with, the global leader should be able to determine the expectations of the employees in the country experiencing the crisis, be able to empathize and be able to minimize the differences between countries. This can be achieved by having a universal perspective.

Global leadership is becoming more and more popular in today’s world where borders are crossed. It is very important to manage operations effectively, to understand different cultures in different countries, and to determine company strategies accordingly. For example, while branches of big banks in Arab geography focus on the Islamic financing method, their branches in America may focus on the mortgage method. However, these branches also have global leaders. These leaders need to integrate different branches and find ways to minimize cultural differences. In addition, it is possible to see the synergy that may arise from differences and turn it into financial and other advantages. Only if they achieve this will they be remembered as a globally influential leader.

According to a study, it has been determined that global leaders are successful in identifying and eliminating differences, spend time and effort raising future leaders, are flexible, maintain balance and have a solution-oriented perspective. Seeing differences primarily requires evaluating our own behavior through empathy in the presence of other cultures. Because everyone should act primarily from the window of their own culture.
